Laser hair removal costs: breaking taboos!

The question of the cost naturally remains the main concern.

The information concerning this technique have been so unclear until now that it was impossible for the patients to have a clear idea of the “correct price”, defined according to reasonable criteria. How can you compare the services proposed if you have no idea of the practitioner’s qualifications, or of the devices used?

After all, you do know when you buy a car that the prices vary according to its performances or body.

It is exactly the same for lasers: it is important to know if the costs are proportional to the services offered, to the supposed efficiency, etc. In a word, you wouldn’t buy a Citroën 2CV if it costs as much as a luxury saloon, so keep informed on the price differences between the different devices available on the market.

The HMC is thus breaking taboos by displaying the costs (although approximate), so that you can have an idea of the quality-price ratio of the services offered, most often supported by attractive advertising…

A fair price can only be determined after a clinical examination that will evaluate the necessary treatment time. This is why we always schedule a first consultation prior to the treatment. This consultation is free, and a laser test will be carried out to determine your tolerance to the treatment and to define a first panel of shooting parameters.

Some patients that cannot – according to us – undergo the treatment may be disappointed, but such a treatment cannot be indicated in all cases.

Overview of the devices available on the market

The diode laser enables to treat efficiently the coarse hair at the beginning of the treatment. Then, the hair get thinner and thinner, and the hair removal generally becomes inefficient quite rapidly. Advantages: a light device easy to install. Disadvantages: only provides good results on dark and thick hair. Our viewpoint: a good extra device for laser centres.

The Nd : Yag laser is dedicated to the treatment of dark or black skins. It can provide long-lasting hair removal after an attack protocol composed of 5 to 8 sessions. The patients will have to schedule a maintenance session every 8 to 10 months. Our viewpoint: every laser centre must be equipped with such a device so as to treat high phototypes. New generation devices give excellent long term results.

The Alexandrite laser still is the best machine for laser hair removal. Most of the brands now propose good devices.

The CANDELA company provides for example the GentleLase and GentleMax while CYNOSURE proposes the Elite and the very specialized Apogee 9300.

We have been using the Apogee 9300 for a long time now, as it is equipped with an intermittent shot delivery system that allows to determine the laser beam parameters very precisely. Moreover, the machine is equipped with a remarkable cooling system that provides both comfort and safety.

Our viewpoint: this laser enables the treatment of a large panel of phototypes: from blond hair up to dark hair on dark skins. The results are almost “definite”: only a few scattered hairs regrow several years after the treatment.

The flash lamps issue

The flash lamp is not a laser, but simply a strong lamp. Its light is spread on a large infrared spectrum and does not penetrate very deeply into the skin. The results of hair removal using this technique are thus not very convincing – except in exceptional cases. It treats the coarse and dark hair at the beginning of the treatment. But the treatment becomes inefficient even faster than with the laser diodes, and sessions have to be scheduled very regularly so as to keep a clear skin.

Even worse: hair are often stimulated by this process, as they are attacked without being destroyed. There exists a large range of flash lamps, from the most basic (10.000 CHF) to top‑of‑the‑line medical devices (90.000 CHF approximately). These devices are used for facial skin rejuvenation. Indeed, their main advantage is to induce burns, so that a new skin is created. It is obvious that such devices must be handled by medical experts only: the potential risks are to induce severe lesions such a deep burns or permanent depigmentation.

The problem currently met with flash lamps (also called IPL for Intense Pulsed Light) is that their use is completely unregulated and that anybody can buy one and use it. Laser manufacturers probably imagine they can make more money by selling many of these cheap machines than by selling expensive lasers to a few practitioners only... Many clients have been seduced by the promise of equipment manufacturers: a modest investment that will bring in money… Aestheticians are constantly harassed by salesmen promising the world. Eventually, patients, who have paid large sums of money without reaching any convincing results, are disappointed, and are exposed to high burn and stimulation risks

Results depending on a complex alchemy

The results depend a lot on the material, the skills of the practitioner, and the scanning technique (simple, double scan).

We are equipped with Alexandrite lasers and new generation Nd :Yag lasers (Cynosure Apogee 9300). Depending on the indications of each patient, we will scan a first time the area with an Alexandrite laser, and a second time with other lasers such as the Nd :Yag (Elite 7000). These protocols will limit the number of sessions necessary to achieve satisfying hair removal.

An efficient management of the time schedule of the machines induces a reduction in operating costs. We can thus offer very interesting prices without omitting quality and safety.

Our objective is to make this wonderful technique available to everybody by offering medical prices, that is prices based on tact and measure.

Do not forget when you choose the medical centre you will rely on that the lowest prices are not always the less expensive (more basic treatment, high number of sessions, regrowth, stimulation, etc.). Beware of price lists dividing the body into numerous little areas, so that they seem less expensive. The final bill may be a bit surprising!

How much does the treatment cost?

Before being treated, inform yourself on the main question: with which device will you be treated? And by whom? Indeed, keep in mind that laser hair removal is not a trivial exercise and that it must be carried out under strict medical supervision.

An Alexandrite laser equipped with all the recent improvements costs 120.000 CHF with maintenance costs of 40.000 CHF per year. Moreover, flash lamps that “lighten up” the laser level must be changed regularly.

The advantages of a diode laser are that it is compact and portable, and that it is directly connected to the mains without any further modification. Its cost varies between 40.000 and 60.000 CHF.

And finally, a flash lamp costs approximately 10.000 to 15.000 CHF.

Thanks to these information, you will be able to compare the prices, to make a reasonable choice and to know who really offers reasonable prices!

If a coefficient 1 is applied to the price of a top-of-the-line alexandrite laser session, the same session using a diode laser should cost three times less, and using a flash lamp … 6 to 10 times less.

So the deduction is simple: if you pay 275 CHF per treatment on the bikini area with an Alexandrite laser – the lasers we are equipped with, the same treatment with a flash lamp should cost thirty Swiss francs approximately. This does not correspond to the prices you have seen? Who has lied according to you…
